How well-known it is
- Deep cut
- Barely written about anywhere. You probably heard about it from someone, not a website.
- Open secret
- Locals know it and a little press has covered it, but it’s still easy to walk past.
- Local legend
- Decades in, on every “best of” list, probably a line. Still the real thing.

The Gem score
Gem score, 0 to 100: how much a place feels like a secret worth keeping. Five marks, weighted. It’s the number beside every place, and the stamp on its page. The page also shows how it scored on these five marks.

Questions
Is The Unlisted free?
Yes. No accounts, no ads, and no place pays to be listed.
Where are my lists saved?
On this device, in your browser. Nothing is sent to us. Clearing your browser data clears your lists, and they don’t sync between your phone and laptop yet.
How do places get in?
Candidates come from OpenStreetMap, local press, neighborhood writing and suggestions. AI drafts each place from public sources and flags what it couldn’t confirm; a person checks it before it goes live. More on that here.
Something’s wrong or a place closed.
Tell us on the contact page. Every place shows the date it was last checked.
Can I suggest a place?
Please do. Suggest a place for the Bay Area or San Diego, or vote for the next city.
What does “Surprise me” do?
Picks one place you haven’t stamped yet, leaning toward places near you and good for the current hour. It asks for your location only when you tap it, and your location never leaves your device.
